In an email sent on Wednesday afternoon, President Williams informed the student body and the larger Muhlenberg community of a 4.8% tuition increase for the upcoming academic year.
"As we strive to maintain and enhance the Muhlenberg experience, the Board of Trustees has approved total student charges for next year of $62,130," said Williams in the email. "Muhlenberg sets an increase in student charges only after extensive analysis of the College’s budget and of resources that we need to strengthen the educational experience we offer."
The "student charges" include tuition, fees and room and board. According to US News and World Report, student charges for the 2016-17 academic year totaled $59,400. As such, this is the first time that expected fees have crossed the $60,000 threshold.
The email also includes the letter that has been sent home to all Muhlenberg parents. The letter includes the rationale for the increase, as well as avenues through which the College strives to reduce operating expenses.
"The College’s budget process is a balancing act between preserving affordability for families and supporting the enduring quality of a Muhlenberg education," said Williams in the letter. "Working together, with pride in and commitment to our College, we are determined to help our students continue to thrive and fulfill their greatest promise."
